Stepping out: Farmers Market

Welcome to funky town

August 14, 2008

The Farmers Market is one small hop, skip and a jump away from The Grove to a more chaotic land full of quirky joints. Like Lucy to Ethel, Mary Kate to Ashley, it's always so much more entertaining to have the funky one from the pair around to jazz things up. Here you'll find food and dessert vendors along shops that sell puka-shelled lamps, gas station uniforms, a plethora of Los Angeles souvenirs and a whole lotta goodies for thrifty spenders. Here's a peep show of what else you'll find:

And they really do make it: Everything is made right there in the stand, in a kitchen area walled with windows so you can see the process in action. They call caramel "carmel," and they do good work with it. Try the Marshmallow Delights (homemade marshmallows enrobed in caramel) or the classic candied apples. Chocolate-dipped fruit is another good option (they have some rare choices like pineapples and figs), or just stick to the English toffee, which is just about the tastiest treat ever created.

The store mainly carries vintage memorabilia from the 1910s to the 1950s, but also offers pins proudly proclaiming "I like Dick" to celebrate Watergate's biggest star and groovy patches when it was all about making love, not war. Other old-school trinkets include Mikey Mouse books, magic tricks, Halloween masks and gas station uniforms, making the good ol' days seem totally bad-ass.

The store sells a lot of copper cookware, centerpieces and table decorations, pastry equipment, coffees and teas, bar tools, and cookbooks.

Über-deisgner Philippe Starck designed the space, as he did for Taschen in New York and Paris, which houses a wide selection of Taschen gems. Whether it's pop culture, sex, film, art or design that gets you—or any combination thereof—enter the store at your own risk. It's a book-lovers paradise.
