Take Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ wedding, for example. The pics of Posh and her football (OK, soccer) star hubby David Beckham were more coveted than those of the bride and groom. And you can’t open a tabloid or gossip rag without seeing her dressed to the nines, looking cool as a cucumber despite the hot, hot heat from all those paparazzi flashbulbs.
The Beckhams—along with their three boys, Brooklyn (nine), Romeo (going to be five in September) and Cruz (two and a half)—are bringing the circus stateside, as they make the move to Los Angeles where David will play for local team, the Galaxy. “Victoria Beckham: Coming to America,” a one-hour special chronicling their across-the-pond relocation, airs Monday, July 16 at 8p.m./7c on NBC.
Check out what Posh had to say to us about her TV special, living in La-La Land and if those rumors of insanely elaborate gifts are true at all.
So did you have a good time filming the show?
It was so much fun doing it. I think people really get to see what I’m really like—I’m just a normal girl from London. I have quite a dry sense of humor, which I’m hoping is going to translate to Americans. [Laughs] People have preconceptions because of the photographs they see of me and the stories they read about me…but a lot of the time, it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Are any of your celebrity friends, like Tom and Katie Holmes, going to make cameos on the show?
I like to keep my personal life separate. We don’t ever allow the children to be photographed or filmed, and I didn’t want any of my friends in it either.
So no kids on the show either—well, are they excited to move here?
They are so excited! I mean they’re still very young—I think that they actually think they’re moving to Disney Land. [Laughs]
Do we see Disney Land, I mean, your new house?
You might do—you have to watch it! [Laughs]
What about the U.S. paparazzi—that can’t be a fun thing to step into.
It’s probably going to be a little bit mad when we first get there, then they’re going to realize that we’re actually quite boring. We stay in a lot as a family. And there are so many really famous people in Los Angeles, that are much more famous than me and David. We’re probably a lot more boring than people actually think!
Will we be seeing the whole family on the sidelines at the Galaxy games?
Definitely, we’re so excited. We love to go to the games—the kids put their little football kits on—so we’re really excited to be there to support David.
Have you invited Tom and Katie to come to the first game?
Yes, I have. They’ve been really supportive of us—they were at David’s last game in Madrid. They’re really good friends of ours, so I reckon that they’ll probably be at the game.
What are your thoughts about the upcoming Spice Girls reunion tour?
For me, it’s really exciting to be getting back with the Spice Girls. We’re not starting out again, we’re not making a new album—what we are doing is celebrating the past. We sold 55 million albums...that’s incredible. We want to really show our fans how grateful we are for how supportive they’ve been over the years. David is going to come on tour and the boys will come as well, with a tutor—I want my kids to see mummy up on stage doing what I used to do!—so we’ll be on tour as a family. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
So are you planning to start singing again?
No. You couldn’t be further from the truth actually...I’ll never sing again. [Laughs] I have no intent on being a solo artist at all. I’m excited about the tour but I’m certainly not using this as a springboard to launch any form of solo career, you’ll be glad to hear! [Laughs]
Maybe a movie career?
Have you seen “Spice World” the movie? I wasn’t really that good! There have been so many reports of me and David wanting to be in films, but I don’t think that will ever happen. I must be the only person in L.A. that doesn’t want to be in film! [Laughs] ”Spice World” wasn’t really that great…I don’t think that we want to go back over that.
There’ve been rumors that you and David give incredibly extravagant gifts to each other, including a $1.8 million diamond-encrusted sex toy…
[Laughs] I’m so glad you asked that question, because I can honestly say that is not true. We’re in an incredibly privileged position, we’ve worked very hard to get where we have. We do buy each other nice things, but it’s never as extravagant as people make out. I don’t have a diamond-encrusted vibrator. I don’t even have a fake diamond encrusted vibrator. I don’t know where that came from. [Laughs]
