Pete Campbell

The pitch: Untalented but ambitious son of an old New York family who seeks to prove his talent and ambition. Relentlessly.
Target audience: Don Draper. And occasionally, Peggy Olsen.
Subliminal message: Campbell’s slicked back coiff and “I’m trying to look like a grown-up” blue suits belie the quarter-life crisis-ish mentality he battles against (and incidentally, often loses to—just ask Peggy).
Bottom line: All the pomade in the world won’t hide your bastard son. If you don’t know what we mean, just ask Peggy.
