Betty Draper

The pitch: Suburban housewife in the midst of an existential crisis.
Target audience: Don Draper, her husband. Also, Glenn Bishop, the neighbor boy.
Subliminal message: While Betty’s brightly colored season one wardrobe seemed to purposely distract from the darker issues that she increasingly could not avoid, season two’s more muted tones suggest her succumbing to the truths of these unpleasantries. If your confidant were a weird nine year old boy, you’d tone it down, too.
Bottom line: Betty’s not one to say what she really thinks—she just wears it.
