It’s been two long years, almost completely absent of excruciating awkwardness (save for frequent repeats on HBO), but now Larry David is back with another season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and he’s more eager to set an example than ever. There are so many “lessons” packed in the first few episodes, it’s giggle-inducing and still a little uncomfortable just recalling them.
Without giving too much away, here are some of the highlights: The utterly un-foolproof way to skip a friend’s party; how to make houseguests feel truly welcome; the trick to not winning the Newlywed Game; how to get pesky stains (stains we can’t even talk about) out of blankets; the upside of being Anonymous; the unwritten laws of dry cleaning (take it, lose it, is it really all even?); that “playing ghost” isn’t for everyone; and why sometimes sampling should go unscrutinized. Really, it’s a wonder he manages to pack it all in!
Who’s that?: Larry and Cheryl, Jeff and Susie, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, Richard Lewis and his latest arm candy, the Funkhousers—they’re all back. But there are some new faces too, including Vivica A. Fox as Loretta Black, the sassy, smoking indoors matriarch of a family that’s taking over the David’s house.
Buzzed about: In the season opener, Larry begrudgingly allows Cheryl to “adopt" the Black family (added comedic element: yes, the Blacks are, in fact, black) made homeless by the fictional Hurricane Edna. Playing on disasters is shaky ground, but that's where Larry shines.
The “ooh” factor: Always threatening to end his stint as television’s socially-inept sociopath, you’ve got to hand it to Larry—he gives the show his all, treating every season like it could be his last.
The “eh” factor: But why is it that every season has to feel like the last? Even just a few episodes in (of the already short 10-episode season), we’re having Richard Lewis-style apocalyptic anxiety attacks, worrying that the end of the knee-slapping laughter is near.
The verdict: It’s gonna be a bumpy (but no doubt hilarious) ride. Hurricane Edna might’ve destroyed some people’s lives, but nothing could’ve prepared them for living with Hurricane Larry.
Season six of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” premieres Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10 p.m./9c on HBO.
