Places to eat, drink and be merry on your way to and from Coachella

The Palm Springs area has long been a haven for retirees eager to escape the crazy kids and their complicated haircuts. But one weekend a year, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival attracts the 18-35 demographic in droves to the sweltering heat. In order to properly take in (and take over) Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, we’ve compiled a shortlist of places to eat, drink, shop and be merry on your way to or from the fest. Enjoy, and don’t forget your sunblock.
Oops—forget that amazing pair of oversized sunglasses you stole from your granny? Have no fear, the Frippery is here with vintage duds for guys and gals.
If you love the Pasadena and 3rd Street branches, check out this location for unique finds that would be snatched up in seconds at those stores. Grab a cute piece of wall art or a trendy trinket, but make sure you check your bank account first—this place is pricey.
Coming to Coachella on Friday but not going to the show? Check out one of most popular gay bars in the area. Dance the night away on the roomy dance floor, or people-watch from the patio.
Any place with tasty chips and salsa is all right in our book. The food isn’t necessarily auténtico, but portions are generous and the pitchers of margaritas are tasty and strong.
If venturing into a gay bar isn’t your scene, this joint will do you good—especially since its late-night happy hour starts at 9 p.m. Bartenders don’t skimp on the booze, and cheap bar snacks can even out your buzz.
If that scorching sun has you fiending for Mexican food on the cheap, El Gallito is a must. This 30-year-old shack is cash-only and tiny, so it’s best to grab and go. Olé!
