This week's DVDs: 'Georgia Rule'

A family drama overshadowed by scandal

PICK OF THE WEEK: GEORGIA RULE

In the most telling sign of a slow DVD week for movie releases, the highest-grossing film to hit disc this week is "Georgia Rule." And it was a box office flop.

In theory, the combination of Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan as three generations of women in one family should've appealed to a diverse group of people and provided some estrogen-driven counter-programming to heavy-hyped summer competition like "Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Controversy over Lohan's bad behavior on set had even heightened the film's profile beyond its modest dramatic storyline (one of the film's producers wrote a disciplinary letter, telling her to curb her partying and arrive to the set on time, that was leaked to the press).

But controversy turned out to be the only interesting thing about the movie. Consider the theatrical and DVD release of "Georgia Rule" as bookends to Lohan's downward spiral of a summer.

For anyone interested in the movie (seriously?) the DVD has a reasonable line-up of extra features: commentary from director Garry Marshall (who knows from both flops—"Exit to Eden"—and hits—"Pretty Woman" and "The Princess Diaries"), deleted scenes (with optional commentary from Marshall), a gag reel and several behind-the-scenes featurettes. But it's probably too much to expect footage of Lohan trying to sober up after a long night out.
